Abstract

This reflective opinion piece draws on the lessons and perspectives gained from a voluntary research project at Sydney Children's Hospital Network, which explored ways to enhance pharmacist involvement in paediatric patient discharge. Although the project aimed to improve medication safety, streamline discharge processes, and support patient flow, the experience ultimately revealed much more about the pharmacy profession itself. Firstly, it highlighted the challenges of conducting meaningful clinical research within complex, multidisciplinary healthcare environments, where balancing practicality, patient needs, and stakeholder priorities is often more difficult than expected. Secondly, it reinforced the need for pharmacists to advocate for their clinical expertise, as the full scope of pharmacists' knowledge and contributions is not always recognised by other healthcare professionals. Finally, the project broadened perspectives on career possibilities within pharmacy, demonstrating the diverse and rewarding opportunities available beyond traditional practice settings, particularly in research and innovation. Together, these reflections underscore the value of research experiences in shaping professional identity, fostering collaboration across healthcare disciplines, and encouraging future pharmacists to contribute to evidence-based practice and the ongoing evolution of the profession.
